Tree Service in Severna Park, MD

Severna Park’s older streets are shaded by big hardwoods, and a lot of yards run right down to the Severn or the Magothy. When one of those trees starts to look risky, Economy Tree Service takes it down safely, trims it back or cleans up the mess after a storm, from Round Bay and Chartwell to Manhattan Beach and Cattail Creek. A Maryland Licensed Tree Expert (LTE# 1929) leads every job, estimates are free, and we answer storm calls 24/7.

Severn Bluffs, Magothy Coves and the Expanded Buffer

Round Bay and Chartwell sit above the Severn, while Manhattan Beach and the neighborhoods around Cattail Creek face the Magothy. Many of these lots lie in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area. Where slopes of 15 percent or more meet the 100-foot buffer, Anne Arundel County expands it by four feet for every percent of slope, or to 50 feet past the top of the slope, whichever is greater.

Severna Park is unincorporated, so the county handles tree rules here. Any disturbance in the buffer or expanded buffer needs a Vegetation Management Plan approved by Inspections and Permits, and so does work in a mapped Bog Protection Area. The county says Anne Arundel has more coastal plain bogs than any other county, including the Round Bay Bog off the Severn.

The county also asks that contracted pruning and removal under these plans be done by a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, and it will not approve tree topping. We prune for clearance and views the right way, document hazard trees, and plan each removal and the native replanting the county requires, so the paperwork matches the work.

The 2006 Tornado and Round-the-Clock Storm Response

On September 28, 2006, an F1 tornado with 90 mph winds touched down near Ritchie Highway and McKinsey Avenue. The National Weather Service traced it through West Ridge, across Cattail Creek and into Lower Magothy Beach, where nearly every tree in one stretch was snapped or uprooted, before it lifted in Pasadena. Falling trees severely damaged 33 homes. Three years earlier, Hurricane Isabel pushed water 5 to 9 feet above normal tides along the western shore. When a tree comes down on your home, car or fence, call 443-228-3578 day or night. We respond 24/7.

Big hardwoods over older homes. Established neighborhoods like Olde Severna Park have tall hardwoods that are decades old, often reaching over roofs and driveways. In the 2006 tornado, large trees 60 to 80 feet tall were uprooted, and some fell through houses.

Unstable bluff trees. Trees on steep Severn River banks in Round Bay and Chartwell can be undercut by erosion and lean toward the water. Work on these slopes often falls in the county’s expanded buffer, so it needs an approved plan.

Topped trees. Topping a tree for a water view leaves weak regrowth that breaks in storms, and Anne Arundel County will not approve topping under a Vegetation Management Plan. We use proper view pruning and crown thinning instead.

Bradford pears. Callery pear, including Bradford, is on Maryland’s prohibited invasive plant list as of January 2026. These trees split at weak branch unions in wind and ice. We remove them and can suggest native trees to plant in their place.

In Severna Park our crews handle tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and storm damage cleanup. For waterfront and marshy ground we offer Marsh Master phragmite control and marsh land clearing, and we also sell seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Severna Park Tree Service FAQ

Do I need a permit for a tree on a steep Severn River bank?
Probably. If the tree is in the 100-foot Critical Area buffer or the expanded buffer over steep slopes, Anne Arundel County requires an approved Vegetation Management Plan before any cutting, even for a dead tree. We assess the slope and help with the documentation.

Can you top my trees to open a view of the river?
No. Topping weakens trees, and the county says it will not approve topping and may treat it as a violation. We can thin the crown or raise the lower limbs to open a view instead, which is far better for the tree.

How close is your yard to Severna Park?
Very close. Our yard is in Crownsville, a short drive from the middle of Severna Park. That helps when trees come down across the neighborhood during a storm and you need a crew fast.

Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Economy Tree Service is fully licensed and insured, and our work is led by a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, license LTE# 1929. Anne Arundel County asks for a licensed tree expert on contracted tree work under a Vegetation Management Plan.
