Magothy Creeks, Severn Shores and the Critical Area

Arnold has water on three sides, so many lots fall inside the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, the land within 1,000 feet of tidal water or tidal wetlands. Homes on Mill Creek, the Little Magothy River, Cape St. Claire and the Severn shoreline often have trees inside the 100-foot buffer, and where steep slopes meet the water the county expands that buffer even farther.

Arnold is unincorporated, so Anne Arundel County sets the rules here. Any disturbance in the buffer needs a Vegetation Management Plan approved by Inspections and Permits, and that includes removing a dead or storm-damaged tree. The county treats trees of any size, plus shrubs and vines, as habitat, and it requires native replanting when live trees come out.

This is where a licensed tree expert helps. The county asks that contracted tree removal and pruning under these plans be done by a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert. We flag the trees for inspection, put together the sketch and photos the county’s Forestry Program asks for, and schedule the work once the plan is approved, so nothing is cut too early.

Broadneck Tornadoes and Fast Help When Trees Fall

On the evening of July 28, 2026, the National Weather Service confirmed two EF1 tornadoes on the Broadneck peninsula. One touched down in woods north of Shore Acres Road and crossed Lake Drive in Cape St. Claire, toppling healthy hardwoods up to a few feet thick. Another, which began at Grays Creek in Lake Shore, crossed the Magothy and uprooted trees along River Bay Road. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel cut power to 196,000 of the county’s 211,000 customers. If a tree lands on your home, car or driveway, call 443-228-3578 any time. We respond 24/7.

Steep creek banks. Wooded slopes drop sharply to Mill Creek and other Magothy coves. Trees on these banks lean out toward the light over the water, and erosion can undercut their roots until they tip. Slopes like these can also widen the county buffer.

Salt at the shoreline. Cape St. Claire and the Little Magothy face open water near the Bay. High tides and storm surge leave salt in the soil, and shoreline trees can decline slowly and turn hazardous before they look dead.

Tall trees in crowded woods. Many Arnold homes sit in mature woods, where hardwoods grow tall and thin as they compete for light. The July 2026 tornado near Lake Drive showed how even healthy trees a few feet thick can come down in a strong storm.

Ash trees in decline. Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Anne Arundel County in 2011. Infested ash trees decline and turn brittle, so ash near homes, driveways and the water is safer to remove before it starts dropping limbs.

Across Arnold and Cape St. Claire we provide tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and storm damage cleanup. For marshy shorelines we offer Marsh Master phragmite control and marsh land clearing, and we sell seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Every estimate is free, so request yours today.

Arnold Tree Service FAQ

Do I need county approval to remove a dead tree near the water in Arnold?
Usually yes, if your lot is in the Critical Area, within 1,000 feet of tidal water or tidal wetlands. Anne Arundel County says all vegetation removal there, including dead or damaged trees, needs an approved Vegetation Management Plan first. We can tell you which rules apply when we visit.

Can you clean up trees still damaged from the July 2026 tornadoes?
Yes. The tornadoes that crossed Lake Drive and River Bay Road snapped tops and left cracked limbs in trees that are still standing. We remove hanging limbs, take down trees that can’t be saved and grind the stumps anywhere on the Broadneck peninsula.

How far is Arnold from your yard?
Not far. Our yard is in Crownsville, a short drive from Arnold and Cape St. Claire, so we can get to you quickly for estimates, scheduled work and 24/7 storm calls anywhere on the Broadneck peninsula.

How much does tree removal cost in Arnold?
Price depends on the tree’s size, how close it is to the house or the water, and how easy it is to reach on a sloped or wooded lot. Our on-site estimates are free, so you know the price before any work begins.
