South River Shorelines and County Buffer Rules
Edgewater is not part of the City of Annapolis. It is unincorporated, so Anne Arundel County’s Chesapeake Bay Critical Area rules apply to trees along the South River, the Rhode River, the Mayo peninsula and the Bay shore at Selby-on-the-Bay and Beverly Beach. The Critical Area reaches 1,000 feet inland from tidal water, and the first 100 feet is a protected buffer.
Before a tree comes down in the buffer, the county needs an approved Vegetation Management Plan, even for a dead or damaged tree. The request needs a property sketch, and each tree has to be marked with flagging, tape or paint for inspection. Requests for single trees that include photos and a short explanation may be processed faster.
We take care of those steps for homeowners. We mark the trees, prepare the sketch and photos, and plan the native replanting the county requires when live trees are removed. Once the plan is approved, our crew does the work, led by a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, as the county asks for contracted tree work.
The 2021 Tornado and 24/7 Storm Cleanup
On September 1, 2021, the remnants of Hurricane Ida produced an EF2 tornado with winds near 125 mph. The National Weather Service tracked it across Central Avenue into Edgewater and through Woodland Beach, Londontowne and Edgewater Park, where dozens of trees and large branches snapped and roofs were damaged, before it crossed the South River into Annapolis. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel pushed water 5 to 9 feet above normal tides along the western shore. If a tree falls on your home, pier path or driveway, call 443-228-3578 any time. We respond 24/7.
Low ground on the Mayo peninsula. Low, wet ground near the water keeps roots shallow in Mayo, Glebe Heights and other peninsula neighborhoods. After heavy rain or a high tide, a large tree in soaked soil can tip over roots and all.
Salt and storm surge. Tidal flooding pushes salt water into yards along the South River and the Bay. Salt slowly weakens shoreline trees, and they can become hazards before the canopy looks bare, so we check them closely.
Phragmites on marsh edges. Tall phragmites reeds take over marsh edges along the South and Rhode Rivers and block water views. Our Marsh Master service cuts and controls phragmite stands. In the Critical Area, invasive control also needs an approved county plan.
Bradford pears. Callery pears, including Bradford, are common in local yards. Maryland put Callery pear on its prohibited invasive plant list effective January 2026, and these trees split apart easily in wind. We remove them and grind the stumps.
In Edgewater and on the Mayo peninsula we offer tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and storm damage cleanup. For shorelines and wet ground we provide Marsh Master phragmite control and marsh land clearing, and we sell seasoned firewood. We are permitted to move and sell wood under Maryland rules. Edgewater Tree Service FAQ
Is Edgewater part of Annapolis?
No. Edgewater is close to Annapolis, but it is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County. That means county rules, including the Critical Area and Vegetation Management Plan requirements, apply to tree work here rather than City of Annapolis rules.
Do you work on the Mayo peninsula?
Yes. We serve Mayo, Selby-on-the-Bay, Beverly Beach, Glebe Heights and the rest of the peninsula, and we take emergency calls there 24/7. Many peninsula lots are near the water, so we check the Critical Area rules before any cutting.
Can you clear phragmites along my South River shoreline?
Yes. Our Marsh Master equipment cuts and controls phragmites on shorelines, ponds and marsh edges. Anne Arundel County encourages invasive removal in the Critical Area but requires an approved plan and native replanting, so we sort that out before work starts.
How much does tree removal cost?
Each job is priced on the tree’s size, its distance from your house, pier or the water, and how easy it is to reach. We give free on-site estimates anywhere in the Edgewater area, so you know the cost before work starts.
